The Concerto wine saver by Vacu Vin will keep wine good for up to two weeks. The moment you open a bottle of wine, it starts to react with the oxygen in the air. The first hour or two actually improves the flavour, but after that the wine starts to spoil. Inventor Bernd Schneider wasn\\'t a big drinker, and would often take a couple of days to finish a bottle. Fed up with wasting good wine because it would not keep, he set about creating a simple and effective method of preventing wine from going off. Bernd reasoned that if oxygen makes wine go off, the best way to stop it from going of is to remove the oxygen. He enlisted the help of his brother John, an engineer, and the concept of the Vacu Vin wine saver was born.
The system consists of a silicone rubber cork and a vacuum pump, and will keep most wines drinkable for a fortnight. Simply place the cork in the wine bottle and fit the pump over the cork. Normally half a dozen strokes of the pump is enough to such all the air out the bottle (the pump clicks when the vacuum is made so you know when to stop). To release the vacuum, simply push a button on the cork.
It\\'s not just wine that stores better in a vacuum, vacuum storage jars can also be used with the pump.
